- Comments Off on Long Island Beach Named “Best” on 2013 Top Ten Beaches List
HAUPPAUGE, NY – For the second time in three years, a beach in Long Island has taken the number one spot on the annual Top Ten Beaches list by noted coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach), a professor at Florida International University. Main Beach in East Hampton was named “Best Beach”2013 on the annual Top Ten list, which includes some of the best U.S. beaches in Florida, Hawaii, the Carolinas and Massachusetts. Coopers Beach in Southampton was named Top Beach in 2010. A lovely example of Long Island’s 100-plus miles of pristine ocean beach coastline, Main Beach was cited for its sparkling surf, idyllic setting, white sand, water temperature, and cleanliness on a list of 50 criteria. The honor is especially noteworthy considering the challenges the beaches in Long Island overcame in preparation for summer following a severe storm season that took [...]

- Comments Off on Jefferson County, West Virginia – In Search Of the Unexpected
Jefferson County, West Virginia is a remarkable part of West Virginia—scenic, wild and wonderful (of course), culturally sophisticated, historic, exciting—the perfect place for those who love adventure and the outdoors.
Discovering Jefferson County by bike, hike or kayak is fabulous, but there’s so much more to explore beyond the trail, bridge or waterway. Making your way “inland” to Harpers Ferry, Bolivar, Charles Town, Ranson and Shepherdstown is such an unexpected pleasure because each has its own individual ambiance and variety of attractions, restaurants and events.
Jefferson County is just over an hour’s drive from the Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas, but it seems a world away from the hustle and bustle. Rafting on the Potomac or Shenandoah rivers is exhilarating, as is a big win at the Charles Town (thoroughbred) Races or at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.
A couple of miles from downtown [...]

- Comments Off on Kentcuky Caves: They’re Not Just Holes in the Ground
I’ll have to admit that I’ve always thought all caves were alike. After all, a hole in the ground is a hole in the ground. Well, I’ve found out this is just another thing I’ve been wrong about! Hart County Kentucky’s three show caves are just like my children — they’re not at all alike, but they’re each special in their own way! Evidently, Kentucky caves have close relationships with water. Sometimes it drips down through the ground to form beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations. You’ll find loads of those at Cub Run Cave and Mammoth Onyx Cave. And sometimes rivers bore through forming passageways. You’ll find that at Hidden River Cave. The rushing river there was once harnessed to generate electricity to the tiny town above, Horse Cave. It’s great to know the caves are open year-round, and the temperature stays the same, about 58 degrees. I’m always looking for a beautiful multi-season adventure, [...]
