Enjoy A Family Vacation in Waycross, Georgia

Waycross, Georgia is a great place for a family vacation. Located in beautiful Southeast Georgia at the northern tip of the Okefenokee Swamp Wildlife Refuse, it is recognized for its Southern hospitality and charm. There is something here for everyone to enjoy. Enjoy outdoor activities such as birding, canoeing and fishing, to name a few.

Located in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuse, Okefenokee Swamp Park at Waycross has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Its lily-decked water trails, with their reflective waters mirroring the overhanging beauty, lead to all points in this vast wilderness. The park features explanatory exhibits, a living reptile museum, wildlife observatory and original swamp homestead exhibiting rare artifacts. The boat tour will take you down narrow Seminole Indian Waterways where you get up close and personal with the alligators. Another great way of getting a good introduction to the old life in the region is to take the railroad tour.

You will enjoy visiting Southern Forest World, a self guided museum, dedicated to educating the importance of the Forest Industry in the south. It offers both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Explore the role of forestry and wood products in colonial America, early logging in the Okefenokee Swamp, modern techniques of tree farming and the region’s wildlife and wood products. The indoor exhibit includes the locally famous “Mummified Dog”. Discovered stuck and petrified in a tree, ‘Stuckie’ is the highlight attraction.

If you enjoy camping, Laura S. Walker State Park offers a family oriented camp ground with camp sites for both tents and RV’s. Located near the northern edge of Okefenokee Swamp, it is home to many fascinating animals and plants. The walk along the lake shore and nature trail will reveal alligators, carnivorous pitcher plants, the gopher tortoise, as well as various birds, such as the great blue herons. Enjoy boating, skiing and fishing in the Park’s lake. Golfers, you don’t want to miss the opportunity to play at ‘The Lakes’, a golf Course at the park. This golf course was voted the Best Municipal Golf Course in Georgia for 2009 by Golf Digest magazine.
