Just off the Northern coast of Ohio on Lake Erie, you’ll find Kelleys Island, which is the largest fresh water American island in Lake Erie. Yet at 4 square miles, it has the feel of a small community, surrounded by forests and beaches. This popular Ohio vacation spot has something for everyone, from outdoor enthusiast, to history buff, to the late-night party-goer. During the day, you can take a stroll along sandy beaches and on the winding boardwalk through woods filled with wild grapes and butterflies. At night, head into town for live music and drinks at the many bars and taverns, each with its own atmosphere and specialties.

The Island is full of history, with sites like the Glacial Grooves State Memorial, where you can see where glaciers cut through the rock, carving channels and grooves over 30,000 years ago. Aside from natural wonders, there are also other historic sites and buildings you can see and tour, like Kelleys Mansion, a 3-story mansion built in 1860’s. Walk through town and see historic and quaint shops.

If you enjoy fishing, Kelleys Island is great place to catch perch, catfish, smallmouth and white bass, as well as the fish they are most well-known for – walleye. Bring your boat, or take a trip on a fishing charter.

Other attractions at Kelleys Island include Kelleys Island Brewery. Taste beer made right here on the island while enjoying live music outside, overlooking Lake Erie. The island also features a winery, Kelleys Island Wine Co., which is known for its relaxed atmosphere and award-winning wines.

So if you’re looking for a fun and relaxing Island getaway, there’s no need to head south. Instead, take a ferry to Ohio’s northern islands for a great vacation on Kelleys Island.
