We all know it’s true – when you think of Wisconsin, you probably think about cheese. While this beautiful state has a lot to offer, it’s most well known for it’s delectable cheeses. And there is no shortage on variety, with over 60 artisan cheesemakers and over 600 varieties of cheese, a Wisconsin vacation can be one of culinary delight. Here is a list of places you won’t want to miss:

Fromagination: This is one of Wisconsin’s premier cheese shops, and features both international and local artisan cheeses. This shop also offers cooking classes, catering, gourmet lunches and fondue events.

Roth Kase: Founded in Switzerland a hundred years ago, Roth Kase was later reestablished in Monore, WI. Take a tour during the week to see the cheesemaking process, and taste one of their award-winning speciality cheese.

Baumgartner’s Cheese Store & Tavern: Open since 1931, this is Wisconsin’s oldest cheese shop, where you’ll find a large selection of both local and imported cheeses, as well as speciality foods. Grab lunch or dinner in the adjoining tavern, which features locally brewed beer.

Carr Valley Cheese: With over 100 varieties of cheese, you are bound to find a favorite! Fourth-generation owner and cheesemaker Sid Cook is a certified Master Cheesemaker, which requires a 15-year training program. The cheeses are made from locally produced milk from cows, goats, and even sheep. Here you will find distinctive cheeses you won’t find anywhere else.

Cedar Grove Cheese: Located in Plain, this eco-friendly cheesemaker produces organic, additive-free cheese. They purchase milk only from local farmers who have made a pledge to not treat their cows with any growth hormones. Take a tour of their facility and see the “Living Machine” – a biological treatment that washes the water left after whey separation.

Widmer’s Cheese Cellars: Using techniques that have been passed down through generations of European and Wisconsin cheesemakers, Widmer’s produces some of the finest Brick, Cheddar, and Colby cheeses.
