Your Adventure Begins in Historic Moundsville West Virginia

If you are looking for a unique getaway or vacation, historic Moundsville West Virginia is the perfect place. Whether you’re looking for a haunted, heritage, cultural, historic or outdoor experience, Moundsville has it all. Sitting in the heart of Moundsville, the Former West Virginia Penitentiary is a gothic-style thrill! The imposing fortress encompasses more than 10 acres, and throughout its 119-year history, saw riots, murders, and the execution of nearly 100 prisoners through either hanging or electrocution. Explore the grounds and see the rows of cramped 5 ft. by 7 ft. cells that often held up to four people. For braver souls, the penitentiary also offers Ghost Adventures!

Located across the street from the Penitentiary is the Grave Creek Mound. The greatest monument of America’s ancient people, the Grave Creek Mound is one of the largest and most famous of the burial mounds built by the Adena people. The Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex houses the Delf Norona Museum and West Virginia’s Archeological Research Center.

Overlooking forest hills and valleys, Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold is reminiscent of a heavenly kingdom. See incredible artwork, beautiful stained-glass windows, crystal chandeliers, wall and ceiling paintings, intricate marble floors and highly polished marble inlaid walls. Experience the mysticism of ancient India high atop the Appalachian foothills. The mountain air carries the sweet fragrance of countless garden flowers. The palace is a site that cannot be found anywhere else in North America.

Considered to be West Virginia’s “Biggest & Best Kept Secret,” the 650+ acre Grand Vue Park sits high above the ridges of Moundsville, overlooking the Ohio River with breathtaking views of forested ridges and ravines with a scenic overlook to take it all in. Beautiful scenery, adventure, fun activities and state of the art accommodations gives you the best of Wild & Wonderful in West Virginia.
