Tours – Main Street Greeneville Tours provides professionally guided tours downtown. “Two Tours You Can’t Miss” offers the guest a 90-minute downtown walking tour that brings the town to life as you stroll down the streets that Andrew Johnson came to as a teenager and called home throughout his long political career. Hear about the Big Spring where the town began, the Capitol of the State of Franklin, Tennessee’s oldest Goal (jail) and much more. You will come away intrigued by the rich history of Greeneville. Monday through Saturday, April thru October. The second tour directs you across the threshold of the Dickson-Williams Mansion and into a storied past filled with exquisite antique furnishings, immortal American heroes, and an intriguing history. Catharine Dickson married Dr. Alexander Williams in 1823 and began a lifetime of lavish entertaining. Step into the bedroom where, in September 1864, General John Hunt Morgan, spent his last night. Learn about his tragic death at the hands of Union soldiers. Truly “A House Divided,” as Catharine had a son in each army, and it is said she never revealed which side she favored. The Mansion was usually chosen as headquarters for whichever side was in town. After the war, the mansion served Greeneville as an academy, a tobacco factory, an inn, and a hospital.
Lyrics on the Lawn – The front lawn of the Dickson-Williams Mansion will be alive with music this July at the twelfth annual Lyrics on the Lawn outdoor music series. A project of Main Street: Greeneville, that takes place every Thursday evening, rain or shine. All performances are free and open to the public.
Two acts perform each week with the opener taking the stage at 7:00pm and the headliner at 8:00pm. Musical genres are assorted offering the audience multiple options over the course of the series.
The Lyrics on the Lawn concerts are family friendly. Folks are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket, bring a picnic supper or purchase food from one the event food vendors, or other area restaurants, to enjoy during the performances.
The Lyrics on the Lawn series was created by Main Street: Greeneville in co-operation with the Dickson-Williams Historical Association to showcase regional musical talent. The Dickson-Williams Mansion is located at 108 North Irish Street, adjacent to the General Morgan Inn in the heart of historic downtown Greeneville, TN.
