Turn Your Eyes to the Skies in Oswego County, NY

With ideal habitats making it an excellent year-round birding area and its fortunate location in the path of totality for the Great American Eclipse, all eyes will want to turn to the skies in Oswego County, New York this spring.

Derby Hill Bird Observatory is one of the premier hawk watches in the Northeastern United States with an average of 40,000 raptors counted each spring as they migrate northward. Hawks, eagles and vultures are the main attraction, but impressive numbers of Snow Geese, Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles can also be seen migrating here.

You’ll find the elusive osprey and bald eagle along the Oswego River Canal, and warblers, heron, waterfowl and several rare bird species near wetland areas along the northwestern shore of Oneida Lake.

Oswego County will welcome visitors to the area for the Great American Eclipse on April 8, 2024. The City of Oswego is preparing to welcome visitors to town with a weekend outdoor block party featuring music and family entertainment to amp up excitement for Monday’s eclipse.

Selkirk Shores State Park will be offering a full day of family fun and educational eclipse activities, such as a food truck, bakery, and an Earth Base II Observatory group demonstration. SUNY Oswego has a full day of activities planned as well, including weather balloons releases every hour, planetarium shows and educational talks.
