Ocracoke Island, North Carolina is presently known as home to wild ponies and an island community that preserves a special lifestyle. Ocracoke also housed a naval base during World War II. The vast waters off of Ocracoke became known as Torpedo Junction as U-boats threatened the coastal defenses of the United States. U-boat torpedo casualties are buried in the British Cemetery in Ocracoke Village.
