There are many caves systems in the US, but our tour guide says the best spelunking is found in the abundant collection of caves located in right in the heart of the USA, especially in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Tennessee. Opportunities are abound for guided tours and rides through caves systems. Or, at many locations, you can don a hard hat and head in on yours own.

Whether you explore solo, as a team, or with the whole family, there’s something quite magical and unforgettable about touring caves and caverns. For those who choose to explore on foot, walking, climbing, sliding and shimmying may be required to complete the cave path of your choice. Some cave and cavern areas close during “bat hibernation” season, November through March, and re-open to the public every April once the well-rested creatures have returned to their active status. Not all caves are home to bats, but those that are find these amazing creatures gladly share their habitat with vacationing humans, curious to get a peek at their incredible hidden-away homes. May through October, caves are essentially empty of bats and bat activity, though they can be observed outdoors at night when they take to the sky from the trees in search of insects or fruit to eat, or to pursue a mate.

Although spelunking is a sport for all ages, it is most important that all visitors leave only foot prints and take only pictures during their caving expedition. Do be certain that every member of your cave exploring team is prepared to respect this most important edict.

Most caves have a consistently cool temperature, sometimes far cooler or warmer than the season outside. Be sure you know what to wear so are prepared for the climate in your cave. At 50 degrees fahrenheit, your fleece and flannel will keep you cozy as the exercise of exploration warms you too.
