Traveling for Work? Make It a Family Vacation Getaway!

In today’s global environment, it’s commonplace for employees to travel frequently for work.

If you have (or your significant other has) an upcoming assignment to an interesting locale, why not turn the trip into a family vacation getaway that both of you (and maybe the kids, too) can enjoy?

For instance, if you’re being sent to St. Louis for a conference at one of the many Missouri hotels, why not stay there for an extra day or two? Though your employer most likely won’t cover the cost for anyone you bring with you, it still can be a serious bargain.

Consider this hypothetical scenario:

Don and Dawn are a couple living in Salem, Massachusetts. Dawn is sent to Williamsburg, Virginia to meet with a client on Thursday, Friday, and Monday. Her company is paying for her airfare plus a room in one of those old, lovely Virginia hotels. If Don comes along, they only have to pay for his airfare, meals and incidentals during the trip because the room is already covered. This translates to a fabulous family vacation getaway at an inexpensive price!

Of course, there is a caveat to working and traveling: You do have to get your work accomplished (and do it well, to boot.) During the times you’ll be required to have your nose to the grindstone, your companion(s) can take the opportunity to sightsee, visit the beach, or just hang out at the hotel pool.

This change of pace, though perhaps not entirely stress-less for you (after all, you’re on the clock, so to speak), will still be a refreshing opportunity to spend some time with your loved ones in a casual environment.

And who knows?

You might find that you love your short weekend in Myrtle Beach so much that you and your spouse decide to rent one of the South Carolina condos there for two weeks next spring.
