Experience the history of one of the most beautiful and verdant states in America. As the “Land of Lincoln,” Illinois was the birthplace of the icon of liberty and freedom. That will be no surprise as you see the wide open swaths of dense forests and prairies beckoning you from every direction on your Illinois vacation with our Illinois travel guide.
When many people hear the word “Illinois,” visions of the bustling city of Chicago come to mind. Chicago is a lovely city and home to most of the state’s population, home of Willis Tower also still widely known as the Sears Tower, and is not only America’s tallest building, but most desirable business address. Climb the 108-story, 1,451-foot building to the top where you can brave the SkyDeck, and overlook the bustling city below on standing on clear glass! But seasoned Illinois travelers venture further south. There are many unique things to do in Illinois that are far from the cityscape. Discover the breadth of experiences you can have and the plethora of Illinois tourist attractions you can enjoy on your Illinois vacation.
One of the state’s most premiere vacation spots is the lovely Rend Lake. This 18,000 acre lake is perfect for fishing, boating, and waterskiing. If the shore is more your speed, the sandy beaches offer a relaxing place to bring the family for the day. Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park is directly adjacent with 20,000 acres of parkland. Plenty of room for camping, hiking, and nature watching. If you’re still in the forest, you may get a chance to see a majestic whitetail deer in its native habitat.
Don’t miss a spot that is on everyone’s “things do in Illinois” bucket list. Head a little bit north and you’ll see the Cross at the Crossroads, a landmark that can be seen for miles. This 198 feet tall structure is said to be the world’s largest cross. Named after its location near “The Crossroads of Opportunity,” where I-57 and I-70 meet, this attraction is near a broad range of restaurants, lodging, and shopping facilities.
When you get a chance, take a trip eastward to a community steeped in cultural and historical treasures. Near Jacksonville, the Underground Railroad was very active in the 1800s. You have the amazing opportunity to tour the actual homes involved in the daring act of helping slaves to freedom. From Woodlawn Farm to the Grierson Home, you can feel the significance of these locations and the people that ran them on your Illinois vacation.>
If you’re interested in the history of Abraham Lincoln, there are plenty of things to do in Illinois. At Lincoln’s New Salem, you’ll find a re-created log village where our 16th President spent close to seven years. Picture young Abe living and working in this amazing historic landmark. Not far from there, you can see the Abraham Lincoln Home and Neighborhood. This two-story house is the only home Lincoln ever owned. If you need a little extra luck, stop by the Abraham Lincoln Monument and rub the shiny nose on a giant copper bust of the Great Emancipator. Don’t worry, everyone does it.
