From “Gone with the Wind” to “The Walking Dead,” Georgia has been the backdrop for many a tale. And it’s no wonder with the state’s rich history and diverse geography. Now it’s time for you to make your own stories with a Georgia vacation getaway.
When most people think of things to do in Georgia with its plethora of Georgia tourist attractions, they conjure up images of Atlanta or peach groves. While those are wonderful places to visit, the more adventurous traveler should consider a trip to the Okefenokee Swamp. According to the Peach State’s Website, “The Okefenokee Swamp is the largest, intact, un-fragmented, freshwater and black water wilderness swamp in North America.” But don’t just take their word for it. Jump in a kayak and travel that soggy wilderness yourself. After an afternoon of spotting alligators, herons and huge dragonflies, wash off the day at a nearby bed and breakfast, campground, or cabin rental.
Next you can head over to Waycross. Located just outside of the Okefenokee Swamp Wildlife Refuge, visitors to Waycross will find museums, historical railroad sites and boat tours. If you visit during spring, you can take part in the Azalea Festival or Swampfest and check out some local bluegrass and gospel music.
After getting acclimated to swamp life, head on over to the coast to find even more Georgia tourist attractions. Between Savannah to the north and Jacksonville, Fla., to the south, you’ll find the Golden Isles. This stretch of four barrier isles along the state’s Atlantic coast caters to all types of vacationers, whether they prefer a tent under the stars or the amenities of a posh resort. The area includes the port city of Brunswick and the four islands: St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island, and Jekyll Island. Each place has its own unique personality, but all of them have that legendary southern charm.
Jekyll Island in particular is a place to consider scheduling into your next Georgia vacation. The southernmost of the four islands, Jekyll Island boasts everything from 10 miles of white sandy beaches to award-winning golf courses to 20 miles of bike trails. Bring your swimsuit for a day at the beach or a visit to a local waterpark. Don’t forget your fishing gear for a chartered fishing excursion or just casting off on the island fishing pier. And bring some nice clothes for a day of shopping and dining at island’s wide variety of boutiques and restaurants. A trip to Jekyll Island would not be complete without visiting the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. The cost of admission goes toward sea turtle rehabilitation, research and education. Visitors can see the turtles up close and learn more about them and other local animals.
