Outdoor enthusiasts rave about the gorgeous West Virginia tourist attractions in general, but specifically about the awesome colors that come with the year-end season. Those interested in West Virginia getaways are usually surprised to learn that the state boasts tree coverage of almost 80 percent.

Some of West Virginia’s most scenic regions are located in its breathtaking Potomac Highlands. Perhaps the area’s most famous section is the Monongahela National Forest, a massive patch of greenery that covers much of West Virginia’s eastern corridor. The area was not only the ancient home of the Native American Adena culture, but was the final battleground of the American Revolutionary War. Visitors are often attracted to the competitive world of greyhound and thoroughbred racing, while other adventurous types spend time at the various gaming tables in the state’s casinos. Whether your gaming pleasure is poker, craps, blackjack or slots, there is something for every adventurous taste in the region’s modern, attractive gaming establishments. After winning at the tables, settle in for the night at the areas many hotels and quaint bed-and-breakfasts.

While the whole state is a great place to visit, the center of the state is an area filled with small towns and big lakes. Known as the Mountain Lakes region, this area is filled with dense forests and peppered generously with historical sites. There are many Mountain Lakes attractions to choose from. You can visit the ancestral home of Stonewall Jackson, or the site of the first land battle of the Civil War.

West of these Mountain Lakes attractions is an area known as Metro Valley. This region has the perfect mix of urban and country landscapes. West Virginia State Capitol complex is located in Charleston. There you can take a guided tour and see how the state gets its business done.
