Five Things You’re Not Doing at Your Family Vacation Spot… But Should Be!

1. Eating Local

There’s nothing wrong with the occasional fast food product, but stop relying on “name brands” when at a family vacation destination!

Instead, enjoy local flavors by visiting smaller, non-chain eateries. And for real flair, seek out farmer’s markets for truly fresh-from-the-earth offerings!

2. Walking

Sure, it’s easy to drive from your Michigan lodging to sightsee, but is it honestly necessary? Too often, we opt for a sort of “laissez faire” attitude, much to the detriment of our health.

Next time you find yourself rushing for the car keys, think twice. Could you take public transportation or, better yet, let your legs do the work? You’ll feel better, sleep better and look better. What’s not to like?

3. Trying Something New

How many times have you gone to a place year after year, only to do the same exact thing every time?

Whether your favorite family vacation getaway spot is in the wilds of Canada or the urban “wilds” of New York City, chances are good you’re missing out on some fun and exciting stuff! So try something new, already!

4. Buying the Local Paper

It’s fine to pick up your free copy of a national publication when on vacation, but don’t forget to buy at least one or two local papers while you’re at your family vacation destination.

When you purchase (and read!) the newspaper(s) of an area, you’ll immediately get insider information on where to go, what to do and what’s hot. Not only will this put you “in the know”, but you’ll start to feel immediately comfortable, even if you’ve never visited the place before.

5. Taking Pictures of What Really Matters

Okay, it’s fine to take four million shots of famous buildings the next time you travel to New York. However, don’t forget that in ten years, the pics that will really matter will be those of your family. Too often, we lose sight of the people around us.

Oh, and one final suggestion… if you’re the camera-hound, get out from behind the lens so you’re in at least a dozen of the shots!
