Camping, Ghosts, Whitewater Rafting: West Virginia Has It All for Tourist Attractions

Fall is actually the best time for camping trips because the weather is still just right, and the trees are beginning to turn. Outdoor enthusiasts rave about the gorgeous West Virginia tourist attractions in general, but specifically about the awesome colors that come with the year-end season. Those interested in West Virginia getaways are usually surprised to learn that the state boasts tree coverage of almost 80 percent.

Fall festivals are one of the state’s other points of pride. Pumpkin and corn and apples are just a few of the fun themes that run through the season’s festival calendar. There is literally something for every festival fan on the roster. Our West Virginia travel guide include a heritage of spooky places, like the legendary ghosts that are said to dwell in and around Harpers Ferry. For decades, residents and tourists alike have put this other-worldly tour near the top of the list for spooky things to do in the U.S.
West Virginia vacation enthusiasts who enjoy antiques have landed in the right place. The state has a reputation as home to some of the finest antique establishments in the world. Everything from inexpensive jewelry and glassware items to larger items like furniture pieces are on the menu for avid antique hunters.

For those who love mountain scenery and lakeside fun, the state has some of the world’s most gorgeous mountain lakes, remote forests and diverse wildlife. The Mountain State has truly earned its nickname. Students of American history will revel in the rich heritage in West Virginia. For starters, no less a personage than George Washington himself spent significant parts of his life in what is now known as the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. In fact, the future president was just a teen when he began his career as a surveyor here.

Some of West Virginia’s most scenic regions are located in its breathtaking Potomac Highlands. Perhaps the area’s most famous section is the Monongahela National Forest, a massive patch of greenery that covers much of West Virginia’s eastern corridor. The National Forest boasts nearly a million acres and encompasses the gorgeous Allegheny Mountain range. Like other Potomac Highlands attractions, the Alleghenies draw outdoor lovers from all over the world. Driving tours, hiking treks and camping adventure await tourists who spend time in this outdoor wonderland.

West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle is unique in many ways. Its Victorian mansions are among the most sprawling homesteads in the world. The area was not only the ancient home of the Native American Adena culture, but was the final battleground of the American Revolutionary War. Visitors are often attracted to the competitive world of greyhound and thoroughbred racing, while other adventurous types spend time at the various gaming tables in the state’s casinos. Whether your gaming pleasure is poker, craps, blackjack or slots, there is something for every adventurous taste in the region’s modern, attractive gaming establishments. After winning at the tables, settle in for the night at the areas many hotels and quaint bed-and-breakfasts.

While the whole state is a great place to visit, the center of the state is an area filled with small towns and big lakes. Known as the Mountain Lakes region, this area is filled with dense forests and peppered generously with historical sites. There are many Mountain Lakes attractions to choose from. You can visit the ancestral home of Stonewall Jackson, or the site of the first land battle of the Civil War.

West of these Mountain Lakes attractions is an area known as Metro Valley. This region has the perfect mix of urban and country landscapes. West Virginia State Capitol complex is located in Charleston. There you can take a guided tour and see how the state gets its business done.

Take a break from everyday life on your trip to West Virginia with our travel guide. The Ohio River is the location of choice for those who seek a real steamboat ride. Many visitors enjoy taking a relaxing water journey in a small rowboat, drifting on one of the many mountain lakes and headed nowhere in particular. Covered bridges and Civil War sites are but two of the West Virginia attractions that everyone seems to enjoy. The state has recently opened a new Civil War park that is among the nation’s best.
Finally, the Hatfield-McCoy Mountains stand as one the most interesting areas in the U.S. This is where key Civil War battles were fought, and where, even before that, the legendary Mingo Tribe made its home.

Don’t miss out on experiencing this slice of Americana. Travel to West Virginia and take in all that makes up one of America’s best vacation spots.
