The National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture will host its traditional cultural arts classes for adults and children at the Women’s Building at the beautiful Jay County Fairgrounds in Portland, Indiana, August 3 through August 5 2013. The classes explore the arts, crafts, traditions and culture of Great Lakes Native Americans through hands-on workshops and presentations by Native American tradition bearers, talented artisans and experts on Native American culture. The Jay County Fairgrounds are on the northeast side of Portland on the corner of Votaw and Morton Streets. Registration is 8 to 9 am Saturday, August 3. Welcome Circle starts at 9 am Saturday. Class hours are 9 am to noon and 1:30 to 4:30 pm daily. BLEND is the a cappella doo-wop group bringing back hits from the 50’s and 60’s with a twist of fun! They make very clear in their frivolous act that they love what they do. Blend was formed at John A. Logan College as a minor project that quickly blossomed into the makings of a successful career for its four members. “We started in 2005 for a talent show and ended up winning it. From there, we found we had a unique sound. So, we decided to pursue it as a career,” said Estes. This unique attraction is a scavenger hunt of sorts, which includes stops in nine northeast Indiana communities. The Garfield Trail is collaboration among the towns of Fairmount, Jonesboro, Gas City, Marion, Matthews, Sweetser, Swayzee and Van Buren. The project was initiated in honor of the Garfield cartoon creator, Jim Davis, who is an area native. Jim Davis grew up on a farm near Fairmount, Indiana.
